The exhibition Troy and Rome. Myths Legends Stories of the Ancient Mediterranean is the result of a collaboration between the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey. It is supported by the Department for the Promotion of Cultural Heritage, the Central Institute for the Economic Valorization and Promotion of Cultural Heritage and the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, as part of the Ministry of Culture’s activity within the Mattei Plan for Africa and the Expanded Mediterranean.
The project aims to strengthen the cultural ties and historical friendship between the two countries and to promote reciprocal knowledge of the heritage of each, in view of strategic dialogue towards cultural and economic development.
The catalogue presents 330 finds from leading Italian and Turkish museums, many of which on view in Italy for the first time. The exhibition creates a dialogue between archaeological evidence fundamental for understanding the historical and mythical heritage of Ilium and materials that document the spread and reformulation of the myth of Aeneas up to the foundation of Rome.
The volume features essays by international specialists that offer a systematic, updated scholarly account of the cultural and historical background of Troy and Rome, reconnecting the threads of the myth, the legend and the historical reality to create a single narrative that embraces around three millennia of Anatolian and Italic civilization.
The Department for the Promotion of Cultural Heritage is a top-level organizational structure focused on the coordination and direction of the places of culture and national museums under the Ministry of Culture. It supports projects and activities that circulate the image and knowledge of Italian cultural heritage, cultural diplomacy, economic valorization and the cultural regeneration of Italy. The Central Institute for the Economic Valorization and Promotion of Cultural Heritage operates as an organizational body within the department.
The Parco Archeologico del Colosseo is an autonomous institute founded in 2017 to research, protect, preserve and promote the monuments and landscape of the Central Archaeological Area of Rome under the Ministry of Culture. It directs excavations, restoration campaigns, exhibitions and projects on the heritage under its remit (Colosseum, Domus Aurea, Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill) as well as national and international partnerships aimed towards the promotion of intercultural dialogue and the image of Rome as a centre of universal humanism.
Under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey, the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums is responsible for the protection, research, documentation, exhibition, and transmission of Turkey's cultural heritage to future generations. The General Directorate also manages museums, archaeological sites, and movable and immovable cultural assets: it coordinates archaeological excavations and restoration work. It also carries out activities to promote cultural heritage nationally and internationally.
