Cosmographies brings together around forty paintings, watercolours and drawings, including a number of large-scale works, produced by Marina Bindella between 2020 and the present day. These works are presented in the artist’s solo exhibition at the Bilotti Museum in Rome. The title does not refer to straightforward representations of the cosmos, but rather to suspended moments within a universe in the making, shaped by processes of aggregation and rarefaction of matter, by orbits and luminous trajectories traced by particles invisible to the human eye.
In recent years, Bindella has explored dimensions beyond sensory perception, bringing together reflections on the constitution of the universe in the thought of Democritus, Lucretius and Anaximander (the ápeiron) with investigations into the subatomic realm of quantum mechanics, as explored by Erwing Schrödinger and Paul Dirac.
Two themes run through the works presented here: light, the generative substance of the mark and of every visible universe, and time, an essential dimension in the becoming of the image, as it unfolds through perception.
The exhibition also highlights the consolidation of a cross disciplinary working method, capable of moving between different languages: from printmaking, the foundational discipline of her artistic practice, to watercolour, painting, and graffito, across a variety of supports.
Marina Bindella cannot simply be defined as a woodcut artist, but rather as an artist who, through the carving and printing of the matrix, has developed a visual alphabet – or, more precisely, a method and a way of thinking – which have guided her confidently in her ongoing encounters with other techniques and materials. This exhibition offers the most aware and mature representation to date of this refined repertoire of linguistic transpositions.
Vive e lavora a Roma dove è docente all’Accademia di Belle Arti.
