Guarino Guarini (1624–1683), undoubtedly the most original and creative architect of the second half of the seventeenth century, has been the subject of extensive study, particularly in conjunction with the fourth centenary of his birth, the date of the conference published here. But while much has been said about the intellectual figure and his works, it remains unclear why Guarini’s idiosyncratic language had such widespread repercussions, from the Iberian Peninsula to Bohemia. These repercussions were fragmentary and non-linear, conveyed through published designs that were taken up by prioritizing floor plans in some instances and sections in others, while the vaulted systems were not imitated but rather revitalized in new forms construction techniques rooted in local realities. Paradoxically, the fact that this architecture is not based on a specific geocultural context but derives from universal geometric and mathematical principles guarantees widespread, if never complete, repercussions. The effects of Guarini’s influence have fostered important scholarly traditions, which, however, operating within national contexts, have not been closely interconnected. This book also seeks, after a long time, to bring these traditions into mutual understanding, inviting Italian, Czech, and German scholars to discuss and construct a portrait of Guarini more in keeping with the international scope of his legacy.

Augusto Roca De Amicis is full professor of History of Architecture at Sapienza University of Rome. He is Director of Sapienza University Press and Editor of the journal “Palladio.” He has studied the major figures of Baroque architecture, urban history, and theoretical and methodological issues.

    Dall’esigenza di raccogliere gli effetti personali del fratello prematuramente scomparso, si fece strada – nell’autrice – l’idea e la necessità di portare avanti ciò che la vita aveva interrotto. E se questo non poteva compiersi concretamente, data la formazione da un chimico e non da architetto, tale proposito si realizza oggi in un’altra forma altrettanto alta ed efficace: con il tramandarsi della memoria e, quindi, con la pubblicazione degli importanti esiti del lavoro di Giuseppe Biancifiori.
    Chi si occupa di ricerca scientifica sa quanto la documentazione e la divulgazione costituiscano materia di fondamentale riscontro e di sviluppo, uniche armi che gli uomini possiedono contro il trascorrere, a volte impietoso, del tempo. Il pensiero infatti non cessa di vivere fintanto che esiste la possibilità di venirne a contatto e di portarlo a progresso.

    “Quale generazione di architetti” potrebbe essere il sottotitolo di questo volume, peraltro monografico, ma è proprio il capostipite Andrea che fonde una dinastia parentale all’insegna della creatività architettonica.Architetto “alla moda” sin dagli anni Trenta in poi, eclettico, fantastico amatissimo dal bel mondo, avendo operato soprattutto sugli interni, ha avuto bisogno da parte dei curatori di pazientissime ricerche d’archivio per poterne ricostruire le tappe creative e professionali. Quel che ne viene fuori è uno spaccato interessantissimo di un gusto alternativo tra le Due Guerre che lasciò il segno un pò in tutta l’Italia.
